What I Write

My young adult novels are dark, edgy, and realistic. Although I love paranormal and fantasy books, I prefer to create stories that could really happen (and in many cases, really are happening). For me, the echo of a story set firmly in the real world always haunts me long after I've read the final word. If you like Ellen Hopkins, Jay Asher, and Neal Shusterman, you might like my books, too.

10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Me

1.) I'm fiercely afraid of the dark--so much that I will run to the kitchen for a bottle of water if it's the middle of the night.

2.) I haven't consumed an entire soda in 14 years (although, I will occasionally steal a sip from my husband's).

3.) I work until I collapse.  I don't collapse until a project is done.

4.) I LOVE to be organized.  And I adore anything that helps me GET organized, like cute totes from Target, pretty wall calendars from B&N, little deco boxes, even filing cabinets.

5.) My idea of a perfect day is running 3 miles on my treadmill, followed by a deep-tissue massage, then sitting around the house with my husband and daughter watching Shrek.

6.) I soooo believe in Fate and Karma.  Everything happens for a reason--good or bad--and every time we succeed or fail at something, it changes who we are and where we're headed.

7.) I love philanthropy.  I'm a PEO, a teacher, and a big supporter of Susan G. Komen.  It's so important to give back to people in need--whether it's buying a tank of gas for a stranger, paying a grocery bill for a woman who's short five bucks, or sending Christmas presents to a family that has an extremely ill child.   Help others, peeps, it will come back to you ten-fold, I swear.

8.) Lifetime movies.  I'll admit it.  I love them.  I'm a sucker for tear-jerkers.  In fact, I was up until 1 a.m. this morning watching a movie called "Fat Like Me" and bawled my eyes out.

9.) I startle incredibly easily.  My husband now announces that he's "walking around the house" to prevent me from jumping a foot and screaming at the top of my lungs when he rounds a doorjamb.

10.) I look at the glass as half-empty.  Yep.  That's me.  I'm a pessimist.  I'll be the first to admit it.  But, before you start shaking your head and feeling bad that I'm a miserable person, just wait a minute.  I believe being a pessimist has made me successful.  If the glass is half-empty, I'm constantly looking for ways to fill it up.  I've never failed at anything that was really important; but it's not because of my awesomeness--it's just because I don't quit until I've succeeded.

  1. Terrified of birds, bugs, and germs (as you know), but the dark only creeps me out when I let myself think about what could be there...waiting...with a knife...

Okay, so maybe I'm a little afraid of the dark.

About Me

I'm a writer of contemporary teen fiction. My bookshelf is SLAMMED with young adult novels and I should be on some sort of twelve step program for my spending habits in Barnes and Noble. And, for the record, I LIKE having real books, so no Nook or Kindle for this gal.
